England v Italy Odds: England May Need Penalties To Defeat Italy
England are in action again on Sunday in what will hopefully not be their last match at Euro 2012, the bookies have the sides almost perfectly matched in the England v Italy odds and this looks a game that could easily go into extra time and penalties may be needed to separate the two teams. The good news is that England are slightly more fancied in the Euro odds at 9/1 compared to the best odds available on Italy of 10/1.
Most England fans will want to avoid a penalty shootout but the Italians seem just as bad at penalties as England. If you fancy England to win this on penalties you can get 10/1, the same odds are available for Italy to win on penalties. If the game can’t be decided in 90 minutes it probably won’t be decided in extra time but if you fancy either of the teams to grab an extra time winner you can get 12/1 on both sides.
In the 90 minute market, the teams also cannot be separated. Both England and Italy are available at 19/10 at the time of writing and with the draw priced up at just 21/10 the bookies clearly think any result is possible here. It is that last named outcome, the draw, that could end up providing the best value as Italy have already drawn two of their three Euro 2012 matches and their only win came against the weakest team at Euro 2012 judging by performances. England, meanwhile, may have won Group D but they have hardly set the world alight with their performances and with the team yet to win a game under Roy Hodgson by more than one goal and yet to play a team as good as Italy you can almost guarantee a close match here.
These two teams have been involved in three draws from six games between them so far and it is worth noting that all of those draws were by 1-1 scorelines. That scoreline, alongside 0-0, look most likely in this match but there were no 0-0s in the group stage showing how attacking the teams have been at this tournament so far and 1-1 just about gets the nod in the correct score market at 11/2 but it may be worth still having a saver on 0-0 at 6/1 with most bookies currently. Both of those scorelines would keep the score under 2.5 goals and that bet will appeal to many at 8/15.
No one has a better ‘goals per game’ ratio at Euro 2012 than Wayne Rooney who scored in his only match so far against Ukraine. He looked as though that game will do him some good so an even fitter Wayne Rooney appeals to score here. He is 6/1 to open the scoring here and 11/5 to score at anytime. Andy Carroll is Liverpool’s most likely scorer according to the bookies at 11/1 and 9/2 in those respective markets but he seems likely to start on the bench against so Steven Gerrard makes a bit more appeal at 14/1 to score first and 5/1 to grab a goal at anytime.
