Wirral Wolves 84, Wirral Hornets 55

Newly formed basketball team The Wirral Wolves won their first game of the season in convincing style over the visiting Wirral Hornets at Woodchurch Sports Centre.

A deft high post bounce pass from Peter Cleary early in the first half hit the path of a cutting David Ross perfectly as he ran the lane for an easy deuce.

Captain Andy Hughes and Adam Bresnan opened the season strong with stifling defence and loose ball hustle, with Hughes top scoring the game by knocking down 20 points.

Johnson hit an open swishing shot from the top of the key and found Ross on several slicing cuts to establish an early lead, from which the visitors struggled to recover.

Hornets Coach Eric 'Ceasar' Wilding has instilled a fearsome defence and relentless spirit in his young team and they came out after the break with a full court press.

The Hornets, led by Stu Williams, made a valiant come back effort early in the second half - but the inexperienced players suffered too many turnovers to make a credible indent on the 20 point lead.

The wily Wolves ran out the victory, with Steven Bresnan, Andy McKay and new comer Simon Mercer holding court until the final buzzer.

Wolves top scorers...
A. Hughes - 20
D. Ross - 14
A. Johnson - 10

Hornets top scorers...
S. Williams - 25
A. Thomas - 9

Speaking after the game Wolves player/coach Martin Klabou said: "We're pleased to get a good win at the start of the season and will continue to build on this in practice.

"The Hornets are a good young team and will no doubt be ready for our offence when we play them at their place in a couple of weeks, so we'll have to come with something new."
