The 2011 Women’s Artistic British Championships are coming to Liverpool for the first time.

The most prestigious event on the British Gymnastics calendar heads to Echo Arena Liverpool on Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July 2011 and sees the country’s top female gymnasts in action.

Liverpool’s superstar 3-time world champion Beth Tweddle MBE and club team-mate and 2010 British Champion Hannah Whelan will be the event’s star attractions.

Beth Tweddle said: “It will be a fantastic opportunity for the British Championships to be held in Liverpool, a lot of my friends and family have always wanted a championship nearby so that they can come and watch me.

“It’s ideal for them to be able to get tickets and come down to the Echo Arena, and for the people of Liverpool to see one of their home grown athletes perform.”

With the prestigious British title at stake the tension will be high and pressure on to see who can handle the nerves of the big crowd to take the title.

Hannah Whelan, from Liverpool, took the senior Gold in 2010 and will face a tough battle to repeat this in her home town.

She said: “I’m really excited for the British Championships to take place in Liverpool.

It will be nice for friends and family to come visit and with it being an arena, the gymnasts will now compete on world-class podiums which will be a good experience for the younger gymnasts.

“Being the current champion adds a bit of pressure but I’m not going to go to the competition with expectations, I’ll just go out and do the best routines I can.”

Competing in Liverpool will be Beijing Olympians, along with World and European Championship gymnasts, wowing the crowd with elegance, power, speed, strength and suppleness over four challenging pieces of apparatus – the vault, bars, beam and the floor.

Medals will be given on each piece, and for the ultimate ‘all-around’ gymnast – the most coveted title of them all.

The 2011 British Championships form part or a crucial year for the British Team, coming just two months before the all-important World Championships in Tokyo, which will decide whether full British Teams will be represented at London 2012.

The gymnasts will experience a world-class competition environment with seating capacity for over 3,000 fans per day, ensuring fantastic support for all competitors.

Chris Briggs Assistant Director at Liverpool City Council Sports Recreation Department, said:

“Liverpool has one of the most successful Gymnastics programmes in the UK.

“The city has won the British Gymnastics Championships 7 times in the last 9 years and has produced an array of outstanding gymnasts, many of whom have gone on to represent their country in international competition.

“The development programme continues to nurture and provide a participation and competition infrastructure from grass roots right up to the high performance level.

“To host an event of this stature in the city is testament to the high regard which Liverpool is held by the BG; it will inspire many young athletes to take up what is a very rewarding sport and will provide a lasting legacy leading into 2012 and beyond”.

Tickets are priced at £15 adult & £10 children, and you can order them by logging on to www.echoarena.com or call the Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400
