Jamie Carragher's 23 Foundation has been selected as one of the 2011 RunLiverpool Marathon charities.

Four in all have been selected as the lead race charities for the inaugural long-distance running event, taking place on October 9.

Scope and Marie Curie Cancer Care have been nominated as official national charities and the Liverpool-based charity Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation will also benefit from the occasion.

Scope is a leading disability charity that supports disabled people and their families throughout their lives.

They believe that disabled people should have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Tom Dixon, Sports Events Manager, said: “Scope is so proud to be one of the official charities for the first RunLiverpool Marathon.

“We are looking to get as many runners involved in this fantastic event as possible, raising money for our vital cause.”

Marie Curie Nurses work throughout the day and night to provide free care for terminally ill people in the comfort of their own home or one of the charity’s hospices.

The Liverpool Hospice, formerly known as Sunnybank Marie Curie Home, was opened in October 1959.

Day care service was started in 1986, and in 1992 a new facility was opened containing 30 beds, day care, out-patient clinics and an education department.

The charity has two centres for palliative care research, The Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute in Liverpool and The Marie Curie Palliative Care Unit in London.

Pat Darling, Events Manager, said: “We are so excited to be chosen as an official charity partner of the Liverpool Marathon.

“This is going to be a great run in a fantastic city, and we’re calling on all runners to sign up and help those facing the toughest challenge of their lives by choosing to run for Marie Curie Cancer Care.”

“Every £20 raised will provide an hour of free care for someone in the region.”

Founded by Liverpool FC’s number 23, Jamie Carragher, the 23 Foundation seeks to provide the youth of Merseyside with the means to make a difference in society by giving them an outlet through football and sport.

The foundation encourages the youth of Merseyside to actively reach for their dreams by following their sporting interests.

Cathy Elliott, Chief Executive of 23 Foundation said: “We’re thrilled to be involved with the first RunLiverpool Marathon.

“All funds will be distributed as grants to voluntary sector groups and charities across Merseyside working with local young people.”

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the only charity in the UK wholly dedicated to the defeat of lung cancer.

It funds research into prevention and early diagnosis, provides practical and emotional support as well as helping people to quit smoking.

Dan Halliday, a fundraiser from The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said: “When we heard the marathon was to return to the city for the first time in more than 20 years, we knew we had to be involved.

“There isn’t anything quite like taking part in a marathon in your own city and by joining our team of Roy’s Runners to raise money to defeat lung cancer, you are sure to have the experience of a lifetime.”

“Lung cancer is the UK’s biggest cancer killer and Liverpool has some of the highest rates of the disease in the country.

“This is just one of the reasons people should sign up to take part in what is sure to be an unforgettable return to marathon running in Liverpool.”

The race is expected to attract an estimated 12,000 participants, in a field comprised of Merseysiders, along with national and international runners.

Over 30,000 visitors are expected to stay in the Liverpool City Region during Marathon weekend.

Alan Rothwell, RunLiverpool Marathon Race Director, said:
‘“Such has been the demand and interest in the RunLiverpool Marathon, that we have decided to support not one but four official charities.

“And we are looking forward to working with all of them to encourage entrants to run for their causes and raise as much money as possible, which in turn will continue the good work that they all do.”

Entries for the 2011 RunLIverpool Marathon officially opened in January.
