Golf: Tavistock Cup set for exciting climax

Team Isleworth lead Team Albany by two shots after the first round of the Tavistock Cup in Florida.

It is the first time the Albany Beach and Golf Club, located in the Bahamas, has been represented in the tournament.

The cup, which began in 2004, has always been contested by the Florida based Isleworth and Lake Nona golf clubs.

But this year, Team Albany will be competing alongside the Queenwood Golf Club of Surrey, England.

Brian Davis and J.B Holmes shot a 12-under par 60 in the best ball format for the Isleworth Golf and Country Club, where the two day event is being held.

It was the joint-lowest scoring of the day, with Graeme McDowell and Retief Goosen mirroring that achievement for Lake Nona.

They were helped by Oliver Wilson and Ross Fisher, who scored 8-under to post 64.

However, they find their team five shots off the pace set by Isleworth.

Justin Rose and Ian Poulter carded a 61 for Albany, who were also helped by a 64 from team mates Tiger Woods and Arjun Atwal.

Woods was coming off the back of a final round 66 at the WGC Cadillac Championship, won by his countryman Nick Watney.

The former world number one’s game is showing signs of getting back on track, as he seeks to win his fifth Masters title at Augusta in April.

Compatriots Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman also shot 63 on a promising day for Albany.

Team Queenwood struggled to 16-under with Thomas Bjorn and Adam Scott registering their highest score of the day of 65.

But Scott did win the long drive competition by striking the ball 295 yards into the wind on the seventh hole.

The 24 participants will now play individual stroke-play, with each of their scores being counted towards determining the World Golf and Country Club Champion.
