Negotiations between Juergen Braehmer and Nathan Cleverly are under way following the WBO’s decision to issue the German champion with an ultimatum.

Braehmer was ordered, in no uncertain terms, to fight the man from Cefn Forest or be stripped of his light-heavyweight title.

This came after he was forced to withdraw from a unification bout with IBA and WBA champion Beibut Shumenov through illness.

Cleverly became number one contender to the German’s crown in December, when he defeated Nadjib Mohammedi on points at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

The Welshman had expressed his concern that Braehmer might try to avoid him, similar to the antics of Sven Ottke, who constantly dodged battle with Cleverly’s former sparring partner, Joe Calzaghe.

He joked: “It seems to be a theme that German champions are running scared from undefeated Welsh boxers.

“Braehmer's the full champion, and I'm the number one ranked challenger. He's the best and I want to fight the best to be declared the real champion.

“He's a good strong fighter, but in my opinion limited. I will give him the toughest and hardest fight of his life against and I know I can win."

The two now look likely to meet in March, subsequent to talks between Frank Warren Promotions and Universum, Braehmer’s promoter.
