ClickMMA caught up with Team Kaobon's Richie Downes following his victory over Team Viper's Bobby McVitie at OMMAC 13: Destiny this past Saturday night in Liverpool's Olympia.
Richie talks about the hard work he put into the Bobby fight, post fight food, Kaobon's grappling and what's next for him.
Enjoy...
ClickMMA: Hi Richie, How're you feeling after the win over Bobby at OMMAC 13?
Richie: First off can I thank Bobby for a great fight, he's a boss lad and a true gent, I'd like to wish him all the best.
I feel great with the win Jay, all my hard work come together on Saturday against Scotland's number one. So, I'm really happy and I picked up fight of the night again with plenty of stitches to prove it ha ha.
ClickMMA: You utilised your grappling strengths to get the W, was that part of your strategy or did you have to re adapt once the fight began?
Richie: To be honest mate I went out there an just went with it, we (Team Kaobon) didn't really have any strategy set in stone as we knew Bobby had done everything ie he's game to stand, he's subbed people, he's been the distance, I just new it could possibly be a long night but I had prepared well no matter were the fight went!
ClickMMA: After the weigh ins you mentioned you'd been on a strict 6 week diet pre-fight. What was the first thing you ate post-fight?
Richie: First thing I do is rehydrate properly for a few hours, about 3am I get some sleep then eat some fruit and a healthy pasta. I try to get a few small meals in that day (no crap), that's this week haha.
ClickMMA: Have you made any plans for what's next for you in MMA or will you be taking some time off?
Richie: No plans yet, just see what my coach Colin plans, hopefully I can look to bigger things mate but I'm having a week off to let my face heal up. I'd be in the gym right now if it weren't for these stitches as I don't stop training (ever), bad habit haha!
ClickMMA: Some fans and critics may see Team Kaobon as a striking specialist gym, due to Colin Heron's coaching skills in Muay Thai, do you think anyone expected you to come out and dominate Bobby on the ground?
Richie: Not sure ya no mate, Kaobon has some unreal ground fighters you only need to look at the level that are on the matts each morning. But we do love to stand as that was are bread an butter before MMA took off.
ClickMMA: Thanks for your time Richie, hopefully see you back in the cage sooner rather than later!
Richie: No problem, I'd like to thank the team and my coach Colin Heron, my S&C coach Paul Odonnell.
Most of all my girl Carly for putting up with me.
