Harvey Elliott has opened up on talks with Arne Slot about his Liverpool role.
Elliott enjoyed a late impact with a hand in Darwin Nunez’s brace which saw the Premier League leaders claim a late win against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
The midfielder has found regular first-team opportunities difficult to come by since returning from a foot injury in November, with predominantly substitute appearances.
Only summer signing Federico Chiesa and academy graduate Tyler Morton have racked up fewer minutes than Elliott in all competitions of the Reds’ senior squad.
But the 21-year-old revealed that constructive discussions with Slot have helped him understand the qualities required to command more game time moving forward.
“It’s been a little bit [frustrating]. At the same time, the team is winning games and the team is doing really well,” said Elliott.
“It’s just friendly conversations of ‘is there anything I need to do to show you to get more game time? ‘Is there anything I need to work on specifically?’
“We’ve had those conversation but it’s not just me. There are other lads in the team who maybe haven’t played as much as they want and probably doing the same thing.
“I just have to keep working hard, keep trying to help the team out whenever I’m needed and just wait for my opportunity. I don’t expect to come in and play straight away.
“I want to help my team out as much as I can and the club and give everything I can.”
Despite his current lack of minutes, Elliott has no plans to entertain a possible exit from Anfield this month despite recent links with Brighton and Borussia Dortmund.
He added: “Liverpool is my club, Liverpool is my team.
“I want to fight for my place, fight for my position in the team. I am going to do what it takes. Do it as much as I can.
“Help the team out when it’s possible. It’s down to me to put in the effort, the hard work, the desire, to make that achievement.
“I am not going to give up, I am going to keep fighting and who knows what might happen.”
