Liverpool have been warned they could ‘kill The Kop’ with rising ticket costs.
A coalition of fan groups sent a joint letter to managing director Andy Hughes on Friday urging the club to consider an urgent reduction in admission prices.
Spirit of Shankly, Spion Kop 1906, LFC Women Supporters’ Club, Cultured LFC and the Official Liverpool Supporters’ Club Network all signed the letter.
The cautionary note arrives during a season-long campaign by fans of many Premier League club supporters against growing issues around ticket pricing.
“We do not want prices to kill the Kop or deter passionate, generational supporters from attending matches at Anfield,” read part of the letter.
“The choices made now will define the future of Liverpool FC. We hope the club will choose to stand with its supporters and uphold the values that have made it a beacon in world football.”
Every top flight club with the exception of Crystal Palace raised their prices for the current season with the average increase coming in at around 6.7%.
Although Liverpool’s increase was 2%, which club officials claimed equate to less than £1 per game for season ticket holders, fans remain concerned.
The letter concludes: “Ticket price increases are a choice, not a necessity.
“Liverpool FC’s revenues have grown exponentially in recent years. The value of the club has increased significantly, and its commercial strength is unrivalled.
“It is a myth that ticket price rises are required to remain competitive.”
