Rafael van der Vaart could be in line for a summer move to Liverpool after the club held talks with Real Madrid.
Following their Europa League semi-final against Real's city rivals Atletico Madrid on Thursday night, Anfield chiefs were offered the opportunuity to sign the 27-year-old attacking midfielder after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Los Blancos chiefs.
Van der Vaart is expected to be one of several big names to be leaving the Spanish capital despite commanding a regular place in Manuel Pellegrini's starting line-up this season, with 24 La Liga appearances to his name.
The Bernabeu club are hoping to recoup most of the €13million they paid Hamburg for the Holland international two years ago.
Meanwhile Swedish prodigy Kristoffer Peterson is expected to sign a permanent deal with Liverpool after enjoying a trial at the club's youth academy earlier this month.
The 15-year-old winger is currently plying his trade with lowly Savedalens IF in his homeland but has impressed chiefs at the Reds' Kirkby centre of excellence and is confident of securing a move to Merseyside shortly.
He said: "I am no longer just toying with the dream. It feels like the club really want to give me a chance."
His advisor, Robert Bengtsson Barkroth, confirmed that a deal is in the pipeline by saying: "We understand that Liverpool are willing to offer an education package, that will include school and studies."
