Andrea Dossena's proposed transfer to Napoli has been put on hold after talks with the player broke down over his wage demands.
The Liverpool defender has been given permission to talk to the Serie A after Rafael Benitez accepted a bid of £4 million. However Pierpaolo Marinoinsists, Napoli's sporting director, has revealed that the Italian's annual salary - a reported £2 million - is the main stumbling block.
"We have taken a break in order to reflect on this. The move is therefore on hold," he said.
"There are no immediate prospects. The president [Aurelio De Laurentiis] has spoken to Benitez, but there is some distance with the player."
Dossena made 26 appearances at Anfield last season following his £7 million summer move from Udinese and scored two goals in total - against Manchester United and Real Madrid in March 2009.
