Liverpool lifted their first trophy of the season after beating the Singapore national team 5-0.

Goals from Fernando Torres, Albert Riera, Andriy Voronin and a late brace from Krisztian Nemeth saw the Anfield club lift the Lion Cup in the National Stadium.

The Reds started strongly and had the best of the chances in the first half, but it was not until half time before they finally broke the deadlock. Out-of-favour striker Voronin shaped to shoot from 25 yards which was deflected into the net, giving the visitors a lead at the break.

In the second half, manager Rafael Benitez made 13 substitutions with Dirk Kuyt, Torres and Riera all taking to the field and the Spanish winger took just eight minutes to double the Reds' lead, smashing a left-footed drive past goalkeeper Sunny.

Hungarian prodigy Nemeth made it three with a goal in the 73rd minute after good work by Kuyt on the right wing. The Dutchman was also the provider for Liverpool's fourth and fifth goals, first playing a ball in to the feet of Torres who side-footed home from close range 10 minutes from time before feeding a cross into the box which Nemeth headed home to finish the game in style.

Speaking after the match, Benitez was full of praise for Nemeth's abilities as well as the club's overall performance during the pre-season tour of the Far East.

"Nemeth is a great finisher. He has scored a lot of goals in the reserve team and today he showed why," said Benitez.

"It was a good game. We worked hard and played at a high tempo with a professional mentality. "I think we are improving physically every single day.

"Some of the players returned late from international duty so it was important for them to play for 30 minutes. "You can see that some of them are a little bit tired, but the mentality and attitude was good and it was a very good game."

Liverpool will now return to Merseyside ahead of another pre-season friendly against RCD Espanyol in Barcelona next Sunday.
