Jamie Carragher has called on Liverpool's hierarchy to put an end to speculation over Xabi Alonso's future at the club.
The Spain international has been the subject of intense speculation this summer linking him with a move to Real Madrid, despite the Reds insisting that he is not for sale, and veteran defender Carragher is hoping for a swift resolution to the ongoing saga.
“The feeling within the squad is that Xabi is a top player and you never want to lose your top players," he said.
“Hopefully something can be sorted out as quickly as possible.
“If the club thinks it is in the best interests of the club sometimes you have to do what is in the best interests of the club.
“But that’s a personal matter for Xabi and maybe the manager and the club.
“Sometimes we all go through these situations – well hopefully I don’t – and as I said, I just hope it gets sorted out sooner rather than later.”
