Reserve Liverpool keeper Charles Itandje has sparked outrage amongst fans for his conduct during Wednesday's Hillsborough service and has been suspended for 14 days while the matter is investigated.
Television cameras appeared to show the 26-year-old Frenchman laughing at the memorial service to remember the 96 people who died at the FA Cup semi-final clash between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989.
A Liverpool spokesman said in a statement on the club's official website: "Charles Itandje has now been officially suspended for 14 days by the club while we investigate his conduct during the Hillsborough Memorial Service."
His actions sparked local outrage, with hundreds of Liverpool supporters reportedly complaining about his behaviour.
Itandje was instructed by Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez not to attend training on Friday.
Itandje responded with an half-hearted apology 'if' he had caused any offence to fans, adding more fuel to the fire.
He said: "First of all, if my behaviour has called offence to anybody then I can only apologise."
"I am sorry, I am sorry, a thousand times I'm sorry. It was never my intention to offend or disrespect anyone.
"To the club, to the fans, and especially to the families I am deeply sorry."
Richie Pedder, chairman of the LFC supporter's club, said: "I don't think he realised the importance of the occasion. That sort of behaviour was highly inappropriate.
"I don't think he will still be at the club come the summer."
Itandje signed for Liverpool in August 2007 and made his first-team debut the following month.
He made six further appearances that season but has not played first team football since and is currently Benitez's third-choice keeper behind Jose Reina and Diego Cavalieri.
