Brendan Rodgers has conceded that Liverpool's Premier League commitments will take precedence over their Europa League schedule owing to the size of his squad.
Several senior players have been rested by the Reds boss for tonight's Group A opener against Young Boys ahead of rivals Manchester United's visit to Anfield this Sunday.
Rodgers has presided over Liverpool's worst domestic start in over a century, having been left with only two recognised strikers until January following a calamitous deadline day which saw them fail to land Clint Dempsey after allowing Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan.
And he believes that it is in the club's best interest to prioritise the league but is also confident the youthful side which will take to the field in Bern are capable of earning a result.
He said: “I can understand why people would perceive us as not taking it seriously but I will always do what is in the best interests of the football club.
"There is no doubt the Premier League is our number one priority, I’ve made that clear from the off. If I lose some of my key players that can make it very difficult for us for the next two or three months.
"There were parts of the game against Arsenal where we were a bit leggy so we have to make sure we are all firing for Sunday.
"No matter what the perception is I know I’ve brought a team I believe can win the game.”
