Liverpool FC have to make Anfield a fortress this season, urges Reina

Pepe Reina has urged his Liverpool team mates to help make Anfield a fortress this season.

Last weekend's opening day defeat at West Brom has started Brendan Rodgers' reign off on a wrong footing with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United all set to test the Reds' resolve in an unenviable fixture list over the coming weeks.

But after recording their worst opening day start in over 75 years, Reina has turned his attention to rectifying Liverpool's fortunes on home soil following last season's dismal form.

An extended run in cup competitions failed to mask the fact that they recorded just six wins at Anfield and fell 17 points short of the Champions League berth, which cost Kenny Dalglish his job.

And while Reina concedes the enormity of the upcoming games, beginning with reigning champions City on Sunday, the goalkeeper has issued a rallying cry to restore Anfield's previously long-standing status as a difficult place for teams to visit.

"It's not [an easy start] but they are what they are and we have to face them," said the Spaniard.

"I'm sure for them it won't be easy for them to come to Anfield either and we have to make ourselves strong at home, especially this year.

"We have to get the results at Anfield."

Reina also believes the 3-0 defeat at the Hawthorns will not become a recurring theme for Liverpool under Rodgers' stewardship despite the currently experimental nature of his reign.

He added: "I don't think we will see many games from Liverpool like this. This is nothing to worry about. It's just early days, it was a bad game. Simple as that.

"We didn't expect that because we were full of confidence and trust in ourselves because we were playing well and getting the ideas - and we still are - from the manager and as I say it's just the beginning."
