Liverpool are on the verge of completing the loan signing of Real Madrid's Nuri Sahin.

The Turkey international is expected to join the Reds in the next 24 hours on a season-long from the Spanish champions, where his place in the midfield pecking order appearing increasingly distant with the impending arrival of Luka Modric from Tottenham.

Arsenal had appeared Sahin's preferred destination, due to the lure of the capital and Champions League football, but is understood to be planning to settle for a temporary switch to Anfield following strong recommendations from several of his Bernabeu peers.

Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid manager, is said to have suggested the 23-year-old linking up with former coaching protege Brendan Rodgers, who was headhunted by and worked the Portuguese for three years at Chelsea, while Xabi Alonso also tipped his former employers.

Rodgers remains in the hunt for a similar deal for Barcelona attacker Cristian Tello and revealed earlier today that he anticipates to add several new faces to Liverpool's squad before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

He said: "There has been contact and communication with the clubs. The team of people behind myself are working very, very hard in relation to those targets.

"We hope that within the next number of weeks those will bear fruit. The work has been continual right the way through to try and get in players that fit the profile of Liverpool and the team.

"Like I say, I would hope there would be a couple more signings before the end of August."
