Liverpool FC: Craig Bellamy joins Cardiff City on free transfer

Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy has today secured a free transfer to Cardiff City.

The 33-year-old has returned to his boyhood club due to personal reasons after less than 12 months back at Anfield, where he scored nine goals in 37 appearances last season.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers revealed earlier this week that Bellamy's motivation for returning to the Welsh capital was to be reunited with his family, who have remained in the city.

Bellamy's second stint on Merseyside, following an initial season-long spell six years ago, saw the former Manchester City attacker revered by the Kop for his tireless work ethic.

His goal against his former club in last season's Carling Cup semi final proved decisive in sending Liverpool through to the final of the competition, where ironically they faced Cardiff.

The Bluebirds unveiled Bellamy at a press conference earlier this afternoon, when the club's chief executive Alan Whiteley said: "I would like to place on record my thanks to a number of key parties that have facilitated Craig's return.

"Firstly to the club's Malaysian investors, Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Dato' Chan Tien Ghee; their support, commitment and confidence in the vision and ambition of the club has enabled us to attract and retain a squad containing the calibre of players that we now have.

"This, quite clearly, is demonstrated by Craig's confidence in joining us at this time.

"I would also like to thank our manager for his tenacity and single mindedness in ensuring the transfer could take place - and for making my life a misery until such time as it could be completed! And of course to Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool Football Club.

"Their assistance and support during the process of negotiations have been conducted in an extremely professional and amicable manner, of which we are grateful."

Bellamy becomes the sixth departure from Liverpool this summer, following in the footsteps of Fabio Aurelio, David Amoo, Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez and Alberto Aquilani.
