Fabio Borini's trademark 'knife' celebration as he opened the scoring for Liverpool may have been the best visual summing up of what transpired in Brendan Rodgers' Anfield debut.

Cutting and devastatingly effective, this was a far cry from last season's profligacy and moreover the brand of 'tiki taka' football for which the Kop had yearned, although their opponents lacked the steel they had possessed during last week's tepid encounter in Belarus.

The weaponry theme continued with an inspired performance from Luis Suarez as the man dubbed 'el pistolero' appeared to have banished his demons of recent months despite the offside flag replacing the woodwork as Liverpool's nemesis in their first game back on home soil.

His interchanges with Steven Gerrard proved a recurring theme and should have given Suarez an early and deserved opener when the compliment was returned but his effort floated over Vladimir Bushma's crossbar.

He went close a mere matter of minutes later after nutmegging Nikloai Kashevski before being denied by Bushma, low down to his left-hand post. The defender would prove instrumental as he deflected Suarez's ball across the face of goal just minutes later.

The ball fell perfectly for Borini to rifle home on his Anfeld debut after Suarez had turned Igor Kuzmenok. Rodgers predicted that the Italian would excite fans and his own link-up play with both Suarez and Gerrard formed a triumvirate which will have them purring in anticipation.

It was a partnership which doubled Liverpool's advantage shortly before the break as Suarez beat several Gomel defenders and drew Bushma from his line before laying off to Gerrard, who side-footed into an empty net to record a milestone 150th goal for the club.

Daniel Agger's inclusion appeared to be more out of necessity than firing a statement of intent to Manchester City, as the Premier League champions' interest in him refuses to cede.

In spite of the uncertainty which surrounds his future, the Denmark international delivered a typically committed performance with the consummate professionalism which the Anfield faithful have long become accustomed and in return offered their impassioned vocal pleas.

"Agger's going nowhere" came the repeated cry from the Kop. They will hope their continued words, and their vociferous support for substitute Andy Carroll, may not go unheeded.

But the Liverpool hierarchy have rarely adhered to sentiment, personified best by how swiftly they deposed of club legend Kenny Dalglish after he failed to deliver in his second tenure.

The Scot's name was given a dignified airing by the home crowd while observers both past and present were in attendance as West Brom manager Steve Clarke assessed his former employers ahead of his side entertaining the Reds in next weekend's Premier League opener.

Joe Allen, also observing from the directors box, is no stranger to the Rodgers effect, having been handed his debut under the Northern Irishman prior to Swansa's promotion in 2011.

His impending move to Anfield, expected to be finalised later today, will see him reunited with his former boss and add a new piece to the ongoing jigsaw that is project Liverpool.

The Wales international will find adaptability in the first team a simple transition with Lucas Leiva, appearing over the worst of his injury nightmare with an assured performance at the heart of midfield, offering a perfect foil alongside Gerrard in a three-pronged midfield.

Glen Johnson's sumptuous half volley capped off an impressive homecoming for Rodgers on a night when progressing to the next qualifying stage of the Europa League seemed almost secondary.

But the former Swansea boss has already set his sights on raising the bar, which will be nothing but music to the ears of Kopites ahead of their most crucial campaign in recent times.

BRENDAN RODGERS: "I thought the players were excellent. Last week we were only four weeks into our pre-season and we had 18 shots against us.

"You can see the result of our work over the course of the week because Gomel only had one shot on target tonight. I was very pleased with the pressing, first and foremost.

"In order for my teams to pass well, it's important that they press well and two of the opening three goals came from good pressure. I was very happy with the structure of the team.

"I thought the movement and the intelligence and the interchanging of the front four was terrific. And I think our positional game has been getting better day by day.

"We've still got a lot to do. There are a lot of improvements still to be made but I thought our performance was very encouraging tonight."
