Luis Suarez has ended doubts over his future by committing to a new long-term deal at Liverpool.
The Uruguayan returned to Merseyside yesterday following his country's elimination from the Olympics, during which he aired his frustration at what he considered a lack of respect by the supporters of host nation Great Britain during last week's 1-0 defeat at the Millennium Stadium.
Suarez hit the headlines last season when he was forced to serve an eight-game ban after the Football Association found him guilty of using offensive language to Patrice Evra in October and refused to shake the Manchester United defender's hand in the corresponding fixture.
During his 18 months with the Reds, however, the 25-year-old has recorded an impressive 21 goals in 52 appearances and has regularly caught the attention of several of Europe's elite.
Serie A champions Juventus and the free-spending Paris Saint-Germain have both expressed an interest in signing Suarez but have seen their plans to prise him away from Anfield dissipate with the signing of the deal, believed to keep him at the club until the summer of 2016 at least.
News of Suarez's extension was accidentally broken by the club's in-house television channel, LFC TV, which broadcast the news prematurely earlier today during an hourly video bulletin.
The transmission was pulled shortly after it had revealed news of the striker's new deal while the station was temporarily halted, citing a 'temporary fault'.
Liverpool have now officially confirmed the deal as Suarez becomes the second player to commit his future to the club after midfielder Jonjo Shelvey agreed a new contract.
Suarez said: "To sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city.
"That is important for me and I am very happy with my new contract.
"When you are a kid, everybody wants to play for Liverpool. I am here now and it is a dream for me, and now I am a Liverpool fan.
"I am happy off the pitch because the people of Liverpool are good with me and my family. I try my best on the pitch and when you are happy off the pitch, you are happy on the pitch.
"I want to say thank-you to the fans because they are our 12th player. The supporters of Liverpool are unbelievable.
"Five or six years ago I watched on TV the stadium and the club, and now I play here and the supporters have helped me. That's very important for me."
