Liverpool FC handed Eastern test in Europa League qualifier

Liverpool will face either FK Renova or FC Gomel in their Europa League quest.

Brendan Rodgers' side will entertain the winner of the clash between the Macedonian and Belarusian clubs, who are fighting it out to face the Reds in the third qualifying round.

Gomel have the upper hand in the qualifier following a 2-0 win in the first leg, following on from their 10-0 hammering of Vikingur, from the Faroe Islands, in the first qualifying round.

The first leg will see Liverpool travelling to Eastern Europe for the first leg on August 2 with the corresponding fixture taking place at Anfield a week later, on August 9.

If Liverpool are drawn against Renova it will see the club repeat their last foray into the competition, which saw them handed a trip to Macedonia, where they faced Rabotnicki.

The 2-0 victory marked the first competitive game of Roy Hodgson's short-lived tenure as manager, with David Ngog's brace rounding off a comfortable performance.

Meanwhile John Henry, Liverpool's principal owner, insists he will no place unnecessary pressure on Rodgers in his first season by achieving Champions League qualification as a minimum requirement.

He said: "We don't want to put any pressure on Brendan by saying you have got to make the Champions League this year.

"Of course he wants to make the Champions League, we all do and so does every team in the Premier League.

"At this point we're just trying to get things stabilised - that should be one of our goals."
