Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Liverpool have made an enquiry for Clint Dempsey.
The Fulham attacker has been intensely linked with a move to Anfield in the past week but the West Londoners insist that they have received no offers for the 29-year-old as yet.
Reds chairman Tom Werner is a known admirer of Dempsey and revealed in May that "any team would be lucky to have" the American international in their ranks.
Last week Rodgers made Roma striker Fabio Borini the first signing of his Liverpool reign and appears intent on making former Swansea midfield general Joe Allen his follow-up capture.
But the new Kop boss insists that developments on Dempsey are still at a prelimnary stage.
He said: "Clint is a player we've enquired about, it is as simple as that.
"Ian Ayre, our managing director, has spoken with the [player's] club to see what the position is. That is where we're at.
"He's a very talented player but we don't like to talk about other clubs' players."
Borini's arrival appears to have sealed Andy Carroll's Liverpool fate, with former club Newcastle United warned that they will have to stump up £20million to secure the striker's return.
The North East club recently saw a loan request rebuffed and Rodgers insists he will not entertain the idea of a temporary switch for a player who was signed for £35million just 18 months ago.
"There has been a lot written and spoken about him but first and foremost Andy is a Liverpool player," he said.
"To consider a loan period for someone the club spent £35million on isn't something we're looking to do at this moment in time.
"Andy will be the same as every other player - if there's ever an offer that comes in we'd look at it as a club and see if it's going to be worthwhile for the club and the team as a whole.
"The club invested £35million in him. People talk about whether he can fit into my style or not, but if you're a club and you spend £35million on a player you'd like to think he can fit into whatever style the team plays.
"He's a good player. He'll join the rest of the group next week and we'll take it from there."
