Liverpool FC: Maxi Rodriguez finalises return to native Argentina

Liverpool have confirmed that Maxi Rodriguez has returned to former club Newell's Old Boys.

A move back to the attacker's native Argentina appeared inevitable after bidding the Reds faithful a fond farewell in their final home game of last season against Chelsea.

Following his £1.5million arrival from Atletico Madrid in January 2010, Maxi recorded 17 goals in 73 appearances while he became something of a talismanic figure for Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers had hoped to retain the 31-year-old's services as he prepares to usher in a new dynasty at Anfield but was unable to convince him to reconsider his options.

"It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years," said Rodriguez.

"I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club."
