Brendan Rodgers set to make first Liverpool FC signing this week

Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he plans to make his first Liverpool signing this week.

Gylfi Sigurdsson shunned the opportunity to reunite with the Northern Irishman, following last season's successful link-up at Swansea, by opting to join Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

With just over a month remaining before the start of the new Premier League season, the Reds have yet to secure the signature of a new player to herald the start of Rodgers' managerial reign.

But the Kop boss is hopeful of concluding his first deal in the coming days and believes it will be one which will not only live up to expectations at Anfield but also excite the club's fans.

He said: "It wasn't a setback. It was an opportunity that we were willing to provide for a young player but not at all costs. I wish Gylfi well and he moved on.

"We hope to complete a deal this week which will be a real exciting one for the football club; one that will be terrific here I'm sure and the supporters will absolutely love him.

"Going forward hopefully we can bring maybe two or three more and then with the group of players that I already have then it'll bode really well for us and provide us hopefully that strength in the group to challenge in every competition."

Sigurdsson's move to White Hart Lane was met with suggestions that Liverpool were unable to match the Icelandic midfielder's wage demands but Rodgers has dampened those claims.

"We didn't lose out because of not wanting to spend the money [on wages]," he insisted.

"We lost out because the manager wasn't prepared to move on it. There's no doubt there'll be other targets and other people that we need to look to bring in.

"But we won't lose out on wages. If we feel there's a player out there in the market whose value and worth can add value to what we're doing here then we'll do everything we can to bring them in."
