Liverpool FC legends to run through the city of London

Liverpool FC legends Phil Neal, John Aldridge and Dave Johnson have accepted the challenge to run through the streets of London in support of Seeing is Believing, a global initiative which helps to tackle avoidable blindness. The trio will be taking part in the Standard Chartered Great City Race on Thursday 12 July, for which Seeing is Believing is the official beneficiary.

The legends have risen to the challenge set by Jack Roughan, Team GB 2012 Paralympic hopeful, and other celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainment who will be running the 5km race blindfolded in support of the initiative. They include Sky Sports presenter SarahJane Mee, ex England cricket hero Darren Gough, Coronation Street actor Oliver Mellor, Sky Sports F1 presenter Natalie Pinkham and 5-times Paralympic gold medal legend Noel Thatcher, MBE. Seeing is Believing ambassador Sir Ranulph Fiennes, OBE will start the race.

Neal, Aldridge and Johnson were all instrumental in making Liverpool FC the most decorated club football team in Europe throughout the 1970s and 1980s; in those decades, Liverpool FC won coveted trophies including the European, UEFA, FA and League Cups and several league championships.

Seeing is Believing was launched by Standard Chartered Bank in 2003 and has since helped 25 million people, giving more than 2.78 million people their sight back. In this year’s race, £5 from every runner’s entry fee will go towards Seeing is Believing, and Standard Chartered Bank has pledged to match all funds raised for the initiative, doubling the impact.

Speaking about the challenge, Phil Neal, said: “This will be a challenge with a difference but one we’re really looking forward to! It’s a fantastic initiative which makes a real difference to people’s lives and I’m delighted to help raise its awareness. I’m hoping to recruit a few more past names from Liverpool FC to join us for our challenge.”
