Alberto Aquilani's plans to leave Liverpool could still lie in the hands of loan club AC Milan.
The midfielder spent a second season-long spell in his native Italy with the Serie A runners up but failed to secure a permanent move after failing to make an impact following his 2009 arrival.
Agent Franco Zavaglia claimed that there had been no interest in the 27-year-old but Aquilani has now been handed a fresh lifeline by Milan, who are planning a summer overhaul of their midfield.
Veterans Clarence Seedorf and Gennaro Gattuso's contracts expire in a matter of weeks while former Arsenal playmaker Mathieu Flamini will not be offered an extension at the San Siro.
And club president Adriano Galliani has hinted that Aquilani could be in consideration.
"Before August 31, another midfielder will arrive, it could be Aquilani or somebody else," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"We haven't spoken yet to Aquilani.
"He is a Liverpool player."
