Liverpool have today edged closer to making Gylfi Sigurdsson their first signing of the summer.
Hoffenheim have confirmed that they have given the 22-year-old midfielder until the end of this month to secure a switch to England, with the Reds now in the box seat for his signature.
Sigurdsson will link up again with new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who urged him to consider former club Swansea City as his first port of call on any permanent move.
The Icelandic international impressed during a season-long loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last term and was in discussions about making the move permanent but talks have since broken down.
A statement from Hoffenheim about Sigurdsson's extended leave period was verified by manager Markus Babbel, the former Liverpool defender, who revealed that negotiations are taking place.
"Gylfi want to stay in England and is in negotiations there," he said.
"Thus, it makes no sense for both sides, for him to return to Hoffenheim, perhaps only for a few days.”
He added: “If, by the deadline on 30 June, he has done nothing, then he is here and will return to his pre-season with us. We have agreed this with him."
Liverpool are understood to be keen on securing Sigurdsson's capture, believed to stand in the region of £8million, before the end of this week as Rodgers looks to prepare for the new season.
