Brendan Rodgers has been unveiled as the new Liverpool manager, and he expressed his pride at the appointment.

Rodgers, 39, left Swansea City to take the reigns at Anfield, following the sacking of Kenny Dalglish several weeks ago.

He said: “I’m very proud, as you can imagine as only the second Northern Irish manager in the history of the club.

“It’s a club with wonderful tradition and I feel very blessed with the opportunity to manage the club.”

Rodgers left Swansea after an impressive season which saw them finish 11th in the Premier League – just five points behind Liverpool.

He also rejected any concerns about his experience.

He said: "My pathway as a young coach has been different to most.

"Even though I am young in age, I have actually been coaching and working in football for nearly 20 years.

“I had four-and-a-half fantastic years at Chelsea where I had experience of working with big players.

“I look at Kenny Dalglish, he was the manager here at 34 and he resigned at 39.

“In that period, he won three leagues and two FA Cups.

“So I arrive here at 39, maybe young in age but with experience in terms of the game.

”Footballers are footballers, they want to learn and they want to be educated and they want to improve.

“That’s something I’ve done with all kinds of players, young and senior, throughout my career.”

The Northern Irishman also insisted that he wants to stay at Anfield for the long-term, and will be given time to improve the club.

He added: “This is long term, that was important for me. To come into a project that was going to be over a number of years.

“It is important to defend the principles of this great club, which is about offensive, creative football but with tactical discipline.

“I want to retain the values of the club, that was the attraction, the history of the club, and also the frustrations.

“It’s been nearly 20 years since they won the title and the realism is that we might not be ready for the title now but the process begins today.

“It’s a new cycle and that’s something that we’ll work towards for years to come.”

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner head praise on the new Reds boss, but also found time to thank Kenny Dalglish for turning the club around.

He said: “I just want to thank Kenny Dalglish, who is the heart and soul of Liverpool and he brought great stability to our club at a time when we most needed it.

“And he will always have our great appreciation and thanks for bringing stability to our club.

“In Brendan we have recruited a very exciting and talented and young manager.

“He is a forward-thinking coach at the forefront of a new generation of managers, and he will bring to Liverpool a style of attacking, relentless football.

“He is an excellent motivator, technician, and someone who I think our players will immediately respect.

“And I believe our supporters will also embrace Brendan’s brand of football based on his attacking principles.

“I think we can all see that his Swansea team last year was highly praised as being a revelation in the Premier League.

“But Brendan is attractive to us for more than what he achieved at Swansea.

“He is an enormously intelligent man, and his dedication to coaching and vision for improvement impressed us.”
