The Football League have scrapped the national anthem before Sunday's Carling Cup final.
Liverpool and Cardiff City will contest the first silverware of the season at Wembley stadium but there will be no rendition during the pre-match pleasantries for fear of widespread booing by both sets of fans.
The key motivation for withdrawing the national anthems ties in with a Football League policy, which dictates that neither will be played should a Welsh team reach the final.
A League spokesman said: "It is the long-standing policy of the Football League not to play national anthems when English and Welsh clubs meet in finals.
"The League regards these matches as domestic rather than international occasions and introduced this policy after fans failed to respect both anthems at previous finals."
The 2008 FA Cup final between Cardiff and Portsmouth was marred by the booing of the English national anthem while Wales' visit to the national stadium for a Euro 2012 qualifier last September was also greeted with jeering by the home fans.
