Kenny Dalglish believes Liverpool's place in the Carling Cup final is reward for the respect with which the club has treated the competition.
A record eighth victory could lie ahead for the Reds at Wembley this Sunday when they take on Cardiff City after overcoming the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City en route to the final.
And Dalglish feels that Liverpool's participation has been down to a long-running level of admiration for the tournament, which remains the first showpiece of the English football campaign, and has warned that the Bluebirds will be treated accordingly when the sides face off this weekend.
"I don't think it's regained the credibility from years gone back," he said.
"I think we've treated it with respect. I think the teams that haven't treated it with respect are few and far between.
He added: "I think everybody that's involved with the football club will take great satisfaction but it's not a foregone conclusion and we should not be getting our minds set that it is going to be like that.
"We'll go there and playing a team who's achieved every thing as much as we have in getting to the final so we'll treat them with the utmost respect as we have done with everybody that we've played against.
"We're going to the final but it's not as if there's no one there who's going to try and win it. Hopefully Cardiff have a great expectation to win it as well.
"It's going to be difficult for us but just the fact that we've got there I think is an achievement and once we get there, obviously we'd rather win the match than lose."
