Liverpool FC beat Manchester City in race to sign latest wonder kid

Liverpool have beaten Manchester City in the race to sign Wycombe striker Jordon Ibe.

The League One club have confirmed that their promising 16-year-old is heading to Anfield after the Reds agreed a deal, believed to be £750,000, to snare him from the league leaders.

Ibe, who became Wycombe's youngest ever player this season, spent trials with both sides earlier this year but has now chosen to switch to Merseyside rather than Manchester.

He was also reportedly tracked by Premier League rivals Manchester United and Fulham.

Gary Waddock has hailed the youngster's move, which comes fresh on the heels of Liverpool's move for MK Dons striker Seyi Ojo, 14, just several weeks ago.

But the Wycombe boss admits it is with a heavy heart that he sees Ibe leaving Adams Park.

He said: "It's a fantastic move for him. He's a phenomenal talent which is why we gave him a chance to show what he can do at first-team level.

"Obviously we wanted to keep him, but we didn't want to stand in the way of an opportunity he deserves.

"I have no doubt in my mind that he will go on to become a big star and I will be keeping a close eye on his progress.

"I would like to wish him and his family all the best for the future."

Now that I live in Wycombe, I also watch them regularly and this kid will go all the way! Just glad we got him first.

I am sick of us signing youngsters - we have spent £30 million over the past few years on our youth team and none have come through!
