Liverpool FC could lose Steven Gerrard for up to two months

Steven Gerrard faces the prospect of another lengthy lay-off as his injury nightmare continues.

The Liverpool captain could be out of action for up to two months after suffering an infection which flared up his right ankle on the eve of his side's trip to West Bromwich Albion.

Gerrard came through last weekend's 1-1 draw with Norwich unscathed but missed the Reds' win at the Hawthorns on Saturday night due to recovering from surgery in hospital.

As a result, he faces a potential four weeks on the sidelines before he can return to training as he bids to put his career back on track after an injury-hit six months.

Gerrard has spent large parts of 2011 struggling with a groin problem which required two rounds of corrective surgery before an infection sidelined him for an additional two months.

Concerns that his playing career will be brought to a premature end, at the age of 31, have resurfaced with Gerrard himself previously admitting that he also feared the worst.

Since he was declared fit to play in late September, he had made five appearances for Liverpool and marked his first of just two starts, notably against Manchester United.

Kenny Dalglish revealed on Saturday that he does not have a timescale for the influential midfielder's return nor that of Jamie Carragher, who strained his calf at Stoke in midweek.

He said: "Carragher has a calf strain. Steven Gerrard has got an infection in his ankle.

"He was in our minds for the game, it just flared up.

“We are certainly much better with them in the squad than not.

"They have been magnificent for this football club and they will continue to be so."

Dalglish has vowed to keep Fabio Capello updated on Gerrard's condition but he is expected to miss England's double header against Spain and Sweden in less than a fortnight's time.

The Reds will also be without their talismanic skipper heading into next month's clash with league leaders Manchester City and domestic and Carling Cup encounters against Chelsea.

If his recovery goes according to plan, Gerrard could return to action as early as the start of December; in time for Liverpool's busy Christmas schedule of four games in 16 days.

In his absence, Dalglish will need to test the depth of his new-look squad with Charlie Adam the leading candidate to partner Lucas Leiva in central midfield while Jordan Henderson and Jay Spearing will both have intentions of also staking a claim.
