Avram Grant has revealed that Liverpool made a late approach for West Ham striker Carlton Cole.
The Hammers boss claims that Roy Hodgson had planned to lure the England international to Anfield before the transfer window shut earlier this evening although no offer was formally tabled.
Grant also suggested that any move for Cole, 26, would have seen maligned Reds winger Ryan Babel heading to Upton Park.
He said: "I think Liverpool were interested (in Cole) at the last moment, they tried to do something.
"I don't think it was an offer. (Babel) was one of the suggestions to do or not to do."
However Babel, speaking on his Twitter account, dismissed earlier reports that he would be heading to the capital by insisting: "I'm going no where. LFC all the way."
