Liverpool will celebrate Steven Gerrard's lengthy career at the club with a testimonial this summer.

Olympiacos have been announced as the designated opponents for the game on Saturday, August 3, which will commemorate 15 years since the Reds captain made his first-team breakthrough at Anfield.

Proceeds from the match, arranged by the club to recognise his endeavour and commitment to his boyhood club, with the Greek outfit will go towards The Steven Gerrard Foundation, set up by the 32-year-old to help transform the lives of disadvantaged children and people in need in the Merseyside area.

Gerrard's previous encounter with Olympiacos in 2004 saw the midfielder score a decisive late goal proved the turning point for Liverpool's eventual Champions League triumph as it booked their place in the knockout stages.

He said: "I am delighted to be honoured by Liverpool FC with a testimonial match and particularly thrilled that Olympiacos have accepted my invitation to play the fixture.

"Last time we met proved to be such a memorable game both for me personally and Liverpool Football Club.

"I am also especially grateful that Olympiacos have truly embraced the aim of this match and chosen to donate their fee to charity. I am looking forward to what I know will be a fantastic game and a wonderful occasion."
