Everton sack Sean Dyche before FA Cup tie

Everton have confirmed Sean Dyche’s departure as manager.

Dyche leaves Goodison Park after just shy of two years at the helm in which he guided the club to Premier League safety in successive seasons.

But the former defender was deposed by new owners The Friedkin Group less than three hours before Thursday’s FA Cup tie with Peterborough.

Last Saturday’s defeat at Bournemouth led to the Blues reviewing Dyche’s position after a dismal run of one win in their last 11 Premier League games.

It is understood that the former Burnley boss felt that he had taken the club as far as he possibly could, which was a driving factor in his surprise sacking.

His backroom lieutenants Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left as the process of appointing his successor begins.

Under-18s coach Leighton Baines and captain Seamus Coleman will lead the first team in the interim, starting with the home encounter against the Posh.

“Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as senior men’s first team manager with immediate effect,” confirmed a club statement.

“Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the club.

“The process to appoint a new manager is under way and an update will be provided in due course.

“Under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”

David Moyes has emerged as the early favourite to take the reins with his former club, having been out of work since leaving West Ham last summer.

The Scot had been in the frame a Goodison return in 2019 but claimed that Everton ‘changed track‘ and promptly appointed Carlo Ancelotti as manager.
