Everton have rejected an approach for Marseille to sign Neal Maupay.

Maupay’s Goodison Park prospects remain ominous at the start of the new season, having joined old club Brentford on loan in the previous campaign.

The French forward was offered a fresh reprieve by the Ligue 1 outfit with another season-long spell but that had been firmly rebuffed by the Blues.

Sean Dyche’s side turned down Les Phoceens’ proposal due to the absence of an obligation to make Maupay’s stay permanent after his loan ended.

A clear-cut exit remains a preferred solution for Goodison officials after the 28-year-old racked up just one goal in 32 appearances for the club.

If a permanent departure cannot be secured by the end of the transfer window, Everton also have the option of triggering an extension in Maupay’s contract.

The Versailles-born player’s existing deal on Merseyside is set to expire next June but could be renewed in order to recoup a transfer fee for him.

Last year, Maupay opened up on the difficulties of his initial 18-month spell with Everton after securing his short-term return to Brentford.

“I didn’t play much, but when I was on the pitch, I wasn’t the best version of myself. I didn’t find my best form,” he told Sky Sports at the time.

“I’m always honest and tell the truth; last season, I didn’t enjoy myself. I didn’t enjoy my football and life up there was tough.

“The people around the club, the fans, made my life really difficult.”
