A resurgent Everton come from behind to seal a stunning 3-1 win against Manchester United at Goodison Park.

Substitutes Dan Gosling and Jack Rodwell scored inside the last 15 minutes to condemn United to their sixth league defeat of the season.

David Moyes' side were not favourites after losing Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill to injury, but started brightly battling for midfield possession.

United opened the scoring when Dimitar Berbatov's 16th-minute goal looked to have paved the way for to turn up the pressure on pacesetters Chelsea at the top of the table.

But Everton had other ideas as they took another major scalp, after recently beating Chelsea, to emphasise their recent improvement.

Russian winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's thunderous strike pulled the blues level within three minutes of Berbatov's goal and both Louis Saha and the excellent Landon Donovan had opportunities to put them ahead.

It was a quiet return to Goodison for in-form United striker Wayne Rooney, who had been kept in check for most of the the match with only a few limited opportunities which Tim Howard dealt with easily.

After the interval United stepped up a gear with Darren Fletcher only inches away from restoring their lead with a flashing shot from the edge of the area.

But It was Everton's two late substitutes who clinched the three points, as Dan Gosling slid in Steven Pienaar's cross with 14 minutes left and Jack Rodwell made it three with a solo effort in the final minute of the match.

United has almost run out of ideas when Rodwell's moment of magic illustrated the talent that has made him a reported £30m transfer target for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The home side's outstanding performer Leon Osman was afforded a standing ovation by ecstatic supporters at the final whistle.

Ferguson will be disappointed United lost the opportunity to make up ground on Chelsea but counterpart Moyes will be elated at his coup of beating both Chelsea and United in successive home league games.

Everton Manager David Moyes said:

"It was a great victory today, we beat Chelsea here the other week, and we've got a squad of players with everyone fit and available we could be a match for most teams.

"Today we won without Cahill and Fellaini, so it just shows you how well the boys in the squad are doing.

"We want to compete with the top teams, which is very difficult. But the players here have given it a right good go, we'll try on push on and see what we can end up with this season."
