Marouane Fellaini will be sidelined for the rest of this season after Everton manager David Moyes confirmed that he has been ruled out of action for up to six months.
Speaking to ESPN ahead of tonight's Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon, the Blues boss revealed that the Belgian's ankle injury suffered in the Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool is more serious than first imagined.
The Scot claims that the injury is similar to that suffered by Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and is expected to require corrective surgery.
He said: "He has a very serious injury and needs an operation...so he will be out for six months.
"It looks like it is the same as Robin van Persie's."
Moyes also revealed that his stance about the challenge by Sotirios Kyrgiakos, which earned the Reds defender an instant red card, had not changed following the injury suffered by his 22-year-old midfielder.
He added: "I haven't changed my views, that it was a two-footed tackle off the ground.
"He was flying towards a player, he could see that coming all the way, so it was a sending off."
