Everton sealed a deserved 2-0 win against Manchester City at Goodison Park to condemn Roberto Mancini to his first defeat as manager.

The Toffees were expected to provide the toughest test of the Italian's reign and so it proved as City were outplayed and well beaten in all areas.

And it was a humiliating afternoon for City's Brazilian striker Robinho, who came off the bench as an early substitute for Roque Santa Cruz, but was then hauled off himself on the hour after a poor performance.

Everton started slowly but improved throughout the first half with American striker Landon Donovan making his first start on his home debut.

In the early stages, winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov forced a fingertip save from Given from 12 yards as Everton put City under pressure, before the Russian then flashed a second shot just wide.

The deadlock was broken, on 36 minutes, when South African Steven Pienaar put the blues in front with a free-kick which squeezed into the bottom corner from the left-edge of the penalty area.

In form striker Louis Saha then added the second with a coolly taken penalty, when City's Micah Richards was punished for pulling the striker's shirt, at the end of the first half injury time.

Everton's superb performance was driven by the magnificent Marouane Fellaini, whose recent form has prompted Moyes to described him as currently the country's finest midfielder.

And Fellaini received the biggest cheers from the home fans when he neatly dribbled and nutmegged ex-Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy off the ball, late in the second half.

It could have been more as Everton hit the bar twice, once with Shay Given clawing out a Marouane Fellaini header and another effort from Tim Cahill which rattled the crossbar.

Everton took no chances defensively, as Moyes used Seamus Coleman's fresh legs to replace Distin with twenty minutes on the clock.

Penalty-scorer Saha left the field to a huge applause from the stands when he made way for James Vaughan for the final five minutes.

Everton manager David Moyes hailed his team's superb play: "From the start to the end we were tremendous."

"I think we have been playing that way recently, just haven't got the goals."

Speaking about his first defeat as Manchester City's manager, Roberto Mancini said: "During the game, I had to change the situation because I can't play with five strikers. "

"For me, it was no penalty, 2-0 at half time it changes the situation.

"Everton played better than us. I think we can play better, tonight we were so-so, but we have a problem with injuries."
