Everton boss David Moyes has confirmed that striker Victor Anichebe will be out for the rest of the season.

A scan revealed the Nigerian has sustained significant knee damage from Kevin Nolan's horrific two footed challenge at Newcastle two weeks ago.

It was feared at the time that Anichebe had broken his leg after limping from the field but club doctors confirmed the extent of his damage was not a fracture but serious enough to require surgery.

The 20-year-old adds to Everton's already lengthy injury list but the return of forward Louis Saha to has boosted the managers fourth place hopes.

Moyes said: "Victor will have an operation and will join Mikel Arteta and Yakubu on the sidelines until the end of the season.

"He's damaged his cartilage and not fractured his leg as we first thought.

"It's a massive blow as he'd just got back into the team and was playing very well.

"It's another player we have lost but we will carry on as always.

"Louis marked his return with a goal which is fantastic for him and the team."
