A website hacker sent the German media wild after a story appeared on the official website of top football club Schalke claiming that their star striker Kevin Kuranyi had been released from his contract.
The striker had been linked with a January move to Everton only to see any potential deal break down before the window closed.
News appeared on Schalke's site claiming that the club had released German international Kuranyi, also target for several other Premier League sides including Bolton and Blackburn Rovers, from his contract and that he was available to move on a free transfer.
But the club has now confirmed that their website was the victim of a hacker attack that produced the false information that spread through the German media like wildfire.
Schalke's general manager Andreas Muller said: "Kuranyi is still a Schalke player and is certainly not leaving from nothing.
"It is obvious our site has been hacked into. Nothing like this has happened before.
"We will be investigating how this information got onto our webpage."
