David Moyes says senior players still have a part to play at Everton but has also emphasised the need for long-term replacements.
Moyes has fashioned his Everton team on a combination of untapped potential, like Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman, and maximising the careers of senior players such as Sylvain Distin and Phil Neville.
Distin yesterday agreed an extension to his current contract at Goodison Park, which was due to expire at the end of this season, to commit his immediate future to the Blues until summer 2014.
Everton were previously tracking Norway international Vegard Forren, who joined Southampton last week, as a potential successor to the 35-year-old and while Moyes has understands the value of the club's more experienced players, he feels they must still continue to look to longevity.
"He's done really well since he's come. He had to come and replace Joleon Lescott, which wasn't easy," said Moyes.
"He wasn't a spring chicken when he came either so from that point of view, I think he's got better. His training's been very good, he looks after himself well so he's earned that another year's contract here.
"We always have to be looking to the future, to find out who the new ones are coming, but at the moment I think Sylvain's certainly got a good bit more playing in him and we're delighted he's signed."
He added: "I think they (senior players) are important but as I've said, you've always got to be thinking of what's the long-term project and for me it's always been who are the young players coming, where are we getting the younger ones that we have to look to develop.
"Over the years we've always had the experience and the likes of Phil Neville and one or two others are getting a bit older now but we need them."
