Everton FC midfielder Tim Cahill on verge of New York Red Bulls switch

Tim Cahill is set to bring his Everton career to an end by joining the New York Red Bulls.

The Australian midfielder has become a mainstay during his eight-year spell at Goodison Park but his association with the club is destined to end after the Blues tonight confirmed they had accepted a "nominal fee" from the Americans, believed to stand in the region of £1million.

Cahill notched 68 goals in 278 appearances for Everton since joining from Millwall in 2004, but the arrival of Steven Naismith has pushed him further down the pecking order, with Marouane Fellaini originally expected to replace him in the advanced attacking role behind Nikica Jelavic.

His departure is widely believed to pave the way for Steven Pienaar's re-signing, following a successful loan spell during the second half of last season with negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur no longer proving a sticking point in securing the South African's return to Merseyside.

With David Moyes planning to reduce the average age of his squad before the new Premier League season starts, Cahill's future has remained the subject of speculation with clubs in China and Saudi Arabia expressing an interest prior to the Red Bulls' tabled offer.

The 32-year-old will link up with former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry for the MLS outfit should the move prove successful while he also faces the prospect of renewing acquaintances with former Everton team mate Landon Donovan when LA Galaxy take on their East Coast rivals.

Cahill was scheduled to miss the first three games of Everton's 2012-13 campaign after being sent off in the final minutes of last season's curtain call against Newcastle United.
