Everton Football Club and Leadership through Sport are launching a new programme for budding young entrepreneurs involving an academic course designed by Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones.
The Club’s charitable arm, Everton in the Community, will be running an exciting new scheme called ‘Leadership Through Sport’ from September 2012, which will equip young people aged 16-19 with the skills to become business and community leaders of the future.
The new programme, which is being delivered in partnership with Liverpool Community College and funded by the charity Leadership through Sport, involves young people studying a year-long BTEC Level 3 in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, and undertaking work experience.
With youth unemployment at an all-time high, the new vocational course will give young people the right skills for the workplace.
The BTEC, which is the equivalent of three A Levels, will see students completing three days in the classroom, where they will learn vital commerce skills, including entrepreneurship, business planning and pitching, leadership and teamwork, and financial literacy and awareness.
The remaining two days per week will be spent based with Everton in the Community, transferring their newly acquired skills into live environments on a variety of exciting schemes delivered by the Blues’ official charity, which cover sport, health, education, employment and social inclusion.
Speaking about the course, Sir Terry Leahy, former Tesco Chief Executive Officer, said: “The BTEC Level 3 in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship is an innovative and exciting new opportunity for young people who want to combine business and sport.
“To hear the course has been designed by Peter Jones, who is an incredibly successful businessman, speaks volumes.
“This, coupled with the invaluable real-life experience students will gain, should motivate young people who have ambitions of becoming entrepreneurs to join the programme, which will ultimately give them the skills to succeed. I am pleased to see a course like this is launching in Liverpool.”
Leadership through Sport is a charity chaired by David Pinchin (former Chairman of Tradition Financial Services) and backed by leading business figures such as Jim O’Neill (Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management) and Michael Spencer (CEO of ICAP), via ICAP’s prestigious charity day. The charity’s aim is to inspire energy and drive in young people who would not usually have the opportunity to develop business, entrepreneurial and leadership skills and become tomorrow’s community leaders.
On Wednesday 18 July between 1-4pm, Everton in the Community will be holding an open day at Goodison Park for young people keen to learn more about the course.
Prospective students must have five GCSE’s between A-C, including English Language, to gain entry onto the course and possess a real interest and determination to become a successful business leader.
Students who are accepted onto the course will be rewarded with significant financial incentives for performing well and to aid their learning.
