Eight unemployed people from Liverpool are being put through their paces at Goodison Park during a seven-week course which will help them improve their employment chances as well as their ball skills.
The ‘Everton 4 Employment’ course has been organised and funded by North West housing provider The Regenda Group together with Everton in the Community and is being delivered at Goodison Park – the home of the Blues. The students are from the Everton, Anfield and Liverpool city centre.
Marcus Johnstone, Worklessness Co-ordinator at Regenda explained: “For a lot of people getting a job isn’t just about finding the right opportunity, it can be about building confidence, learning the best ways to present yourself and making sure that you have all the right qualifications and experience. The beauty of this course is that it includes sessions aimed at improving health and well-being, learning how to manage a budget and acquiring new and valuable skills such as first aid and sports leadership.”
During the first session the students received a tour of the stadium which included a behind the scenes look at the dressing rooms and the dug out as well as the chance to follow in the footsteps of footballing legends Dixie Dean, Duncan Ferguson and Peter Reid to today’s goal-scoring hero Nikica Jelavic by emerging from the tunnel onto the pitch side.
Scott Black, Everton 4 Employment Coordinator, said: “The course is all about giving people the confidence to find a career that they will enjoy and helping them to achieve their full potential. By using the power of the football club, we are engaging with people who may be low in confidence as a result of being unemployed for some time and by boosting their motivation and skill sets to help them back into work.
“Everton in the Community’s key aim is to engage all our communities, but particularly more disadvantaged groups, and positive programmes such as this make a real impact on their lives.”
The Regenda Group is a leading housing and regeneration organisation, with 13,000 properties across the North West providing homes for more than 25,000 people.
