Everton duo Sylvain Distin and Phil Neville have added their backing to calls for Harry Redknapp to be appointed the next England manager.

Capello resigned last night following an interview recorded by Italian television where he voiced his displeasure at the Football Association's decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.

Wembley chiefs today announced that Stuart Pearce would take temporary charge of the national side for this month's friendly with the Netherlands but focus remains on Capello's successor with the Three Lions lacking stewardship just four months before the European Championships.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp remains the firm favourite to take the reins at the end of the season and has been tipped for the role by Blues defender Distin, who won the FA Cup under the 64-year-old during his time as manager of Portsmouth.

He said: "I don't think there are many people around who will come and take this job and succeed, but the quality Harry has he will do a good job there.

"I think his main quality is his man-management. He knows how to speak to the players, how to get the best out of them, how to make you feel positive and confident. For me, I think that is his main asset.

"When you are manager of a national team, I won't say it's not about football, but you have got experienced players and you don't have much to teach them.

"All you have to do is make sure they get on well together and play well together. You pick the best players of the Premier League and everywhere in England and I think he has all the qualities for this job."

Everton captain Phil Neville has backed his team mate's call by advocating a return to a home-grown coach after the FA appointed two overseas coaches during the previous decade.

"Everybody wants an English person. We've gone down the foreign route," said Neville.

"For me, I want the best person in charge of the England national team, a person who is going to build a good strong team and put us in a place where we can be challenging for a major championship."
