Leighton Baines believes last month's influx of new faces has given Everton's season a much-needed boost.

Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic joined the Blues' ranks in a £5.5millio ndeal while former midfielder Steven Pienaar returned to Goodison Park on loan during a dramatic transfer deadline day.

Darron Gibson's arrival from Manchester United helped bolster Everton's midfield, as did the short-term capture of LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan on a two-month loan.

"I think [the transfer window] lifted everyone associated with the club. It certainly did from what we see within the club, it gave everyone a boost," Baines told Everton TV.

"It was massive, in particular, what that 24 hours did for us with the two new lads coming in and the win over Manchester City.

"Of course we had signed a couple of lads before that as well, so it was a productive period for the club and we certainly feel as though we are on the up again."

He added: "We needed it and it does lift people. It is hard to articulate exactly why that is at times but to get the new bodies in really helped. The training on the Friday before Wigan was the first time we had all trained together and the whole session went up a notch or two."
