Leighton Baines has withdrawn from the England squad with a hamstring injury making him the second Blues player to pull up while on international duty.
The Everton left back picked up his knock while training with the national team on Sunday ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at Wembley.
The news comes after Victor Anichebe hobbled out of Nigeria's 2-0 win over Madagascar with a groin strain.
Baines' injury, which has not responded to treatment by Fabio Capello's medical staff, is not thought to be serious, but the defender's departure does leave the Italian short of options at left back.
Joleon Lescott could be one of the players called upon to deputise for Ashley Cole, having had experience playing in the position during his time on Merseyside.
