Everton FC: Whelan won't stand in the way of N'Zogbia exit

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that Charles N'Zogbia has asked to leave the club and that the Latics are now taking offers for the midfielder.

The Frenchman, a summer target for Everton, is said to desire a move in order to boost his chances at international level having recently established himself in Laurent Blanc's squad.

Whelan said that he will not stand in the way of any player who no longer wants to play for his beloved club and admitted he has told N'Zogbia, if the right offer comes in "we will let you go."

He said: "There is quite a lot of interest in Zoggy.

"He has said to me I've enjoyed my time at Wigan but I want to move on to other things.

"He's very proud now of playing for France again and he feels a bigger club would be better for him for selection for France, for which we have to agree and I've said we will not stand in his way.

"There have been plenty of enquiries but the season is still a bit away yet and the transfer market is only just beginning to kick in.

"They're all on holiday but we'll come together in a fortnight and sort it.

"If a player comes in saying he's unhappy playing for Wigan Athletic, I want to move - I'm not going to say you can't move. I'm going to say okay, we'll put you on the list, try and find you a club, as long as we get the right fee, we're going to let you go."

That statement will put the lengthening list of clubs interested in N'Zogbia on high alert with a bidding war being the best outcome for Dave Whelan and Wigan.

Everton have made no secret of their admiration for the tricky winger, but any move will have to be funded by the sales of members of the current playing staff.

The Blues have already generated some income with the sale of James Vaughan to Premier League new boys Norwich.

It is hoped that the imminent departure of out of favour striker Yakubu will contribute towards a modest war chest which could be used to lure N'Zobia to Merseyside next season.
