Joey Barton has poured cold water on rumours that he could be about to quit St James' Park to Merseyside.
The midfielder's future looks uncertain at Newcastle after the Magpies chose not to offer him a new deal at the club.
That has led to heightened speculation about where Barton will be playing his football next season with both of his hometown clubs Everton and Liverpool being strongly linked.
But the 28-year-old, one of the latest Premier League stars to open an official Twitter account, used his personal page to laugh off the connections with Everton.
He tweeted: "Finished playing golf, 72 not bad. Came in to questions about joining Everton???
"I don't want to leave Newcastle but thanks anyways..."
Unless his contract situation is resolved, Barton will be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2012 when his current deal expires.
